I'm Amanda Austin, the proud founder of the Little Shop of Miniatures, a haven for dollhouse enthusiasts located in Erie, PA. I started this journey back in May twenty seventeen, and since then, it's been a roller coaster of learning and growth. My store, which officially opened its virtual doors in November twenty seventeen, offers a vast array of dollhouse kits and miniatures, catering to hobbyists, children working on school projects, and companies creating model displays for corporate events. Despite the seasonal fluctuations, with summer being the slow period, I've managed to maintain a steady revenue stream, averaging around four grand a month.
—

Before embarking on this entrepreneurial path, I was stuck in a dissatisfying job in the marketing department of a Fortune five hundred insurance company. The discontent nudged me to explore other avenues, and e-commerce caught my attention. I invested in a course to understand the intricacies of the online market space. My research led me to discover a niche that was not only profitable but also close to my heart - dollhouse miniatures.
—

I remember the miniature store in my local mall that I was obsessed with as a child. My grandma had crafted a dollhouse for me, and I would spend all my allowances buying miniatures to adorn it. This childhood connection to miniatures made the business idea even more appealing.
—

I took a strategic approach, focusing on long-tail keywords with decent search volumes and low competition. The goal was to rank well in organic searches, and I was determined to build a site that would attract a good number of visitors through well-placed keywords. I attended one of the largest trade shows for dollhouse miniatures in Las Vegas, where I connected with a company willing to drop ship for me, saving me from the hassle of managing inventory.
—

Setting up the business was an exciting phase. I chose Shopify for my online store, a platform I fell in love with for its user-friendliness and excellent support team. Leveraging my background in copywriting and website management, I focused on creating a blog rich with keywords related to dollhouse miniatures. Despite being somewhat lax in updating the content, the blog has continued to draw thousands to my site monthly, offering valuable insights and tips on topics such as choosing the right glue for dollhouses.
—

The initial investment was below five grand, funded from my savings. The real challenge was the opportunity cost of leaving my day job to focus on the business. The first year was slow, teaching me the lonely side of entrepreneurship. However, I found solace in a full-time role at a successful local business, where I managed various aspects including their Shopify, Amazon, and email marketing, while simultaneously running my store during free time.
—

To stand out in the market, I emphasized a great design for my site, making it more user-friendly and attractive compared to the competition. SEO became my best friend, helping me rank for three main keywords through meticulous optimization of various elements on my site, including product descriptions and meta descriptions. My blog became a powerhouse, attracting a significant amount of traffic through helpful content and Pinterest pins created from Canva templates, which brought around seven hundred referrals a week.
—

Networking played a crucial role in growing my business. I reached out to influencers in the dollhouse miniatures space, creating roundup posts featuring the best blogs and Instagram accounts. This not only brought backlinks but also fostered valuable relationships, like the one with The Daily Mini, who featured my products in a book she published later.
—

Email marketing through Klaviyo became an essential tool, helping me set up a welcome series and manage abandoned cart emails effectively. Despite experimenting with Facebook posts and Google Ads, I realized that my margins couldn't sustain digital advertising. Hence, I focused on maintaining a high rank on Google's first page and nurturing my returning customers, who constitute about eleven percent of my traffic.
—

Today, my store stands strong, witnessing a two hundred and twelve percent growth year over year according to Shopify. The journey hasn't been without hurdles, including a significant glitch right before Black Friday, coinciding with the birth of my first child. The store started listing out-of-stock items, creating a chaotic situation that took six months to resolve. Despite the stress and the thought of shutting down crossing my mind multiple times, my stubborn nature kept me going.
—

Looking ahead, I plan to expand my product range, choosing from the twenty thousand options my supplier offers. Improving my email marketing strategy and maintaining my top spot on Google's organic search results are high on my priority list. While the thought of dominating the industry is tempting, my young and growing family takes precedence at the moment.
